From Albertus LightStrider’s Archive – Alan Heyl Interview May 2006

With permission granted by his parole officer, Alan Heyl was driven by Albertus to the Radio 702 studio for an hour long prerecorded interview, which was played on The Alternative View, a weekly two hour astrological radio show produced and presented by Albertus.
Here are some Chironic thoughts and spiritual insights into Alan Heyl’s Horoscope as discussed with him on air.

THE WOUNDED HEALER -FROM GAOL TO GOAL
The exploits of the Stander Gang grabbed the imagination of South Africa to the point that they became almost folkloric figures at the time and they still have a vivid presence in our memories of life in Jo’burg.

The release from prison of Alan Heyl, the last survivor of the gang reminded me, as it did many other people, of that strange charisma they achieved. It was echoed again, very clearly, in the storm of media and public attention surrounding Heyl’s release.

Quite apart from my natural curiosity I was interested as an astrologer as well. What sends a group of intelligent and skilled men off the straight and narrow path? If I looked at their charts would I be able to see it?

THE HORARY CHART
WILL I GET THE INTERVIEW – THE ROLE OF CHIRON AND THE GALACTIC POINT

As I always do whenever I am asking a question, I check the horary chart of the question itself and was not entirely surprised to see that Chiron, the Wounded Healer was prominent. It was another moment of synchronicity

Over the horizon was Sagittarius at 26 degrees which is the symbol of the Centaur that points to the mid-point of our galaxy, known to astrologers as the Galactic Point. It is a point of healing and universal significance.

What made the whole astrological picture so interesting is that Pluto, the Dark Lord of the Underworld, that is also an emblem of transformation and change, is moving towards that healing point which it will reach from February to May 2006 and again in December 2006.

The best way to describe the energy of this conjunction between Pluto and the Galactic Point is that it is like a chrysalis that is stirring into life and will emerge from its cocoon quite different from what it was when the cocoon was sealed.

That symbolism in the sky during the period when Alan Heyl was being released was so striking to me that, although I am not a crime reporter, on Monday, 15 May, I applied for an interview with him. Those energies were so distinctive that I wanted to know how they related to his personal transformation.

The first surprise was that they took my request seriously. The second was that Alan Heyl knew who I was. “Are you the guy who writes those LightStrider columns?” he asked and when I said, I was, he told me that he had been reading them very carefully and was happy to meet me.

THE INTERVIEW GRANTED – 17 May 2006

So it came about that while he was buttoning his shirt and tying his shoe-laces as he readied himself to ask the parole office for permission to give another media interview on the Wednesday, that we spoke, not about his criminal past, but about the spiritual changes he has undergone in prison.

I knew they were there. There was a clear sign of it in his birth-chart, which has Chiron the Wounded Healer at 26 degrees of Sagittarius, the sacred Galactic Point I mentioned earlier.

Chiron in any chart is always an indication of how we are wounded and of how we can transform that wounding into an energy that can help us and others to heal ourselves. Chiron is a centaur, half man, half horse. It is a potent symbol of how human strength and insight can overcome and gain control over the baser animal energies symbolised by the horse’s hindquarters.

Sagittarius is also a centaur, the starry archer who aims his bow at the exact centre of the universe, the Galactic Point of healing and transformation.

HIS CHIRON RETURN AND A NEW BEGINNING?

Heyl’s chart shows his Chiron at exactly that point. It was confirmed when he told me about his interest in metaphysics and healing energy.

He says he has been teaching it to his fellow prisoners for the last three years. It is a self-healing therapy, which he studied by correspondence through the Metamorphosis Healing Academy of South Africa in Johannesburg.

Interestingly this time of healing and study relates to the astrological Chiron Return, when Chiron returned to its birthplace position in Heyl’s birth-chart during February, June and November 2001.

We each have a Chironic return about the age of 52 to 53 when we have the opportunity to heal the emotional, intellectual and spiritual wounds of our past in order to walk our future path with dignity.

HEALING AND PROSPECTS FOR THE FUTURE?
This is, says Heyl, where his future lies. He wishes to study further and start teaching what he has learned to the public, especially in schools so that they can gain a self-healing, self-protecting vision of the violence and crime in our society.

I asked Alan how he felt about the fact of his imprisonment, his separation from his family and the world in which he had lived. “I am a reclusive and solitary person,” he said. “I have a need for solitude so it was not as tough as you may think. I was able to pull back into myself and focus on what I had to do next.”

THE VIRGO SUN AND MERCURY RETROGARDE – A STRONG INNER LIFE?

I showed him how powerfully that aspect is reflected in his birth-chart because he is a Virgo sun-sign, which is meticulous and analytical. Virgo indicates a strong inner life, especially when Mercury is retrograde, as it is in Heyl’s chart.

Alan responded by saying “That’s exactly what I did. I became deeply introspective and analytical about myself and my life up to then and I started studying philosophy.”

Because Alan’s Birth Chart shows Venus conjunct Mercury in Virgo, which is also retrograde, it gives another indication of his need to bolster his self-esteem. I asked him how that had played out for him in terms of his emotions.

“It was a major issue for me,” said Alan: “I had to learn about the value of my body and my whole being but the key was that I had to learn about humility. You cannot get stuck in being a victim because then it becomes someone else’s fault and not yours. You have to face what you are and accept it without falling into self-pity and victimhood.

“I had to learn that we are all entitled to a sense of self-worth and self-esteem, but I also had to learn that you have to create it and not just assume it” he said.

VENUS AND MERCURY – ALAN’S CREATIVE TALENT

The Venus-Mercury aspect is also about creativity and I asked him how that had manifested itself in prison. “I have a very low boredom threshold. I need to be stimulated and challenged, so I read a lot about art. But what really focused my mind was music, especially the violin. I became very interested in violin concertos, especially those of Max Bruch, Mendelssohn and Tchaikowsky.”

I felt slightly awkward asking my next question to a man who was just recently released from prison, but I had to know his feeling about karma and the price we pay for our actions.

ALAN’S FEELINGS ABOUT KARMA

“We live in a world of energy flows,” he said, “Why should we be party to negative energy patterns if we can be loving and caring in our thoughts and actions? That is the message because it is the beginning of love.”

JUPITER IN ARIES – WHAT ROLE WILL HE PLAY IN HIS FUTURE?

His birth chart also shows Jupiter, the sign of the leader, philosopher and teacher, in Aries, which relates to the head, to his mindspace, to innovation and to freedom. “I have a great need to be free, but part of the prison thing was that I had to be removed from society to analyse myself, so that I could understand who I am and how my freedom can be expressed and achieved.”

I suggested that a close analogy might be that it was like going into a monastery to find the teaching that comes within and he said, “That’s brilliant, that’s exactly what it was for me.”

A LOVE OF ANIMALS – WHAT IS HIS TOTEM ANIMAL?

Another element that I saw reflected strongly in his chart was a love of animals and a powerful link with Leo the sign of the cat, which he confirmed it. I asked what he would choose as a totem animal for himself and he said “A leopard because it is independent, strong and well-groomed”, which is a list of typical Virgo attributes.

As he had raised the subject of leopards, I asked how he felt about the many people who would look at him and his past life and say “A leopard cannot change his spots.”

THE FUTURE – CAN A LEOPARD CHANGE ITS SPOTS?

He replied, “A leopard who can change his spots would be the worst deceiver. He could show everyone exactly what he wanted them to see. It would be the worst kind of lie,” he said and I did not push that question any further.

But perhaps the most telling part of our conversation also related to an animal. He has a pet kitten called Snowball, that came to him as a wounded and traumatized animal that he is nurturing back to health.

It was an unexpected example of the compassion and nurturing emotions that he says he has discovered and explored during his time in prison.

It is these things he hopes to reflect and share as he starts this new path of healing through teaching the things he first learned for himself in a prison cell.

As the Moon wanes to the Dark Moon of May 27, it is a week for emotional and spiritual detox, and letting go as we aim to release toxic energies from the past: who better then to discuss this than Alan Heyl who was imprisoned for many years for his involvement in the Stander Gang.

Having been a free man for a year now, Alan Heyl talks about his experiences of the New World, his love of music and the violin concerto’s of Dvorak.

Albertus discusses this week’s Astrological pattern of Venus, Mars and Pluto: which relates to values and how you could initiate action to bring about life affirming change as indicated by your personal Sun, and Ascendant Sign.
